Category  Pharmaceutic aid (flavouring agent).

        Lemon Spirit contains not less than 3.45 per cent   w/v and not more than 4.60 per cent w/v of aldehydes, calculated as citral, C₁₀H₁₆O.

        Lemon Spirit may be prepared as follow.
        Terpeneless Lemon Oil             100  mL
        Ethanol, sufficient to produce  1000  mL
Mix.

Packaging and storage  Lemon Spirit shall be kept in tightly closed containers of glass or other suitable material and stored at a temperature not exceeding 25°.

Weight per millilitre  0.814 to 0.823 g (Appendix 4.9).

Ethanol content  84 to 88 per cent v/v (Method II, Appendix 6.5).

Assay  Carry out the method for the “Determination of Aldehydes” (Appendix 7.9), using 10.0 mL of Lemon Spirit, omitting the toluene and using a volume, not less than 7 mL, of hydroxylamine in ethanol (60 per cent) TS that exceeds by 1 to 2 mL the volume of 0.5 M potassium hydroxide in ethanol (60 per cent) VS required.  Each mL of 0.5 M potassium hydroxide in ethanol (60 per cent) VS is equivalent to 76.73 mg of C₁₀H₁₆O.

Other requirements  Complies with the requirements described under “Spirits” (Appendix 1.16).
