Senega Liquid Extract may be prepared as follows.
Senega Root, in moderately coarse powder 1000 g
Dilute Ammonia Solution a sufficient quantity
Ethanol (60 Per Cent) a sufficient quantity
Exhaust the Senega in moderately coarse powder with Ethanol (60 Per Cent) by percolation (Appendix 7.18). Reserve the first 800 mL of percolate; evaporate the subsequent percolate to the consistency of a soft extract, and dissolve it in the reserved portion. Add sufficient dilute ammonia solution to make the product slightly alkaline, and add sufficient Ethanol (60 Per Cent) to produce 1000 mL. Allow to stand for not less than 48 hours and filter.
Dose 0.3 to 1 mL.
Weight per milliliter 1.03 to 1.05 g (Appendix 4.9).
Ethanol content 38.0 to 42.0 per cent v/v (Method II, Appendix 6.5).
Total solids 26.0 to 34.0 per cent w/v (Appendix 7.21); use 500 mg.
Other requirements Complies with the requirements described under “Extracts” (Appendix 1.16).
