Lemon Syrup contains not less than 2.2 per cent w/v and not more than 2.6 per cent w/v of citric acid monohydrate, C6H8O7∙H2O.
Lemon Syrup may be prepared as follows.
Lemon Spirit 5 mL
Citric Acid Monohydrate 25 g
Invert Syrup 100 mL
Syrup, sufficient to produce 1000 mL
Dissolve the Citric Acid Monohydrate in some of the Syrup, add the Invert Syrup, the Lemon Spirit, and sufficient Syrup to produce 1000 mL and mix.
Packaging and storage Lemon Syrup shall be kept in well-closed containers and stored at a temperature not exceeding 25°.
Weight per millilitre About 1.33 g (Appendix 4.9).
Assay Mix about 8 g of Lemon Syrup, accurately weighed, with 100 mL of water and titrate with 0.1 M sodium hydroxide VS using a 1.0 per cent w/v solution of phenolphthalein in ethanol as indicator. Each mL of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide VS is equivalent to 7.005 mg of C6H8O7∙H2O. Determine the weight per mL as described in the “Determination of Weight per Millilitre, Specific Gravity and Relative Density” (Appendix 4.9), and calculate the content of C6H8O7∙H2O, weight in volume.
Other requirements Complies with the requirements described under “Oral Liquids” (Appendix 1.16).
