Turpentine Liniment yield, on distillation in steam, not less than 72.0 per cent v/w and not more than 79.0 per cent v/w of volatile oil and camphor.
Turpentine Liniment may be prepared as follows.
Soft Soap 75 g
Camphor, Racemic or Natural 50 g
Turpentine Oil 650 mL
Purified Water, freshly boiled and cooled 225 mL
Triturate Camphor with Soft Soap until thoroughly mixed and gradually add Turpentine Oil, triturating well after each addition. Transfer the mixture to a bottle using Purified Water and shake thoroughly until a creamy emulsion is formed.
Strength available 65 per cent v/v of turpentine oil and 5 per cent w/v of camphor.
Dose Adults: Topical, to the affected area, not more than three or four times a day.
Refractive index Of the liquid obtained in the Assay, 1.465 to 1.477 (Appendix 4.7).
Assay Acidify about 50 g of Turpentine Liniment, accurately weighed, with 1M sulfuric acid using methyl orange TS as indicator, distil in steam and collect the distillate in separator. Occasionally separate the aqueous portion of the distillate and return to the flask. When all the volatile matter has been distilled, remove the aqueous portion of the distillate and measure the volume of the oily liquid.
Other requirements Complies with the requirements described under “Liniments” (Appendix 1.16).
